January Cement Shipments Head Lower

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in January 2025 were an estimated 5.73 million metric tons (Mt), a 3.1% decrease from revised shipments in January 2024, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey.

Of total blended tonnage reported year-to-date in 2025, 3.14 Mt (96%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas.

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in January 2025 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Arizona and Georgia, in descending order) received 51.1% of shipments in January.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 150,000 metric tons in January 2025, an 8.7% decrease from those in January 2024. The leading masonry cement consuming states in January were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 67.2% of shipments in January.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 4.27 Mt in January 2025, a 10.7% decrease from production in January 2024. The leading clinker-producing states in January 2024 were, in descending order, Missouri, California, Texas, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 55.8% of January clinker production.

Data for clinker imports into the Detroit and Seattle customs districts do not include material trucked in from Canada on an informal-entry basis. Monthly imports can show significant year-over-year changes for a variety of reasons and commonly do not correlate well with consumption levels in the respective import districts in the same month.

January 2025 imports of cement and clinker, including the San Juan, PR, customs district, totaled 1.51 Mt, a 17.8% decrease from imports in January 2024.
